Join our expert panelists in a discussion on how technology is changing the way we can and must prepare adults for college and career readiness and to become lifelong learners in an increasingly digital world. Edtech and employment tech developers, researchers, funders, and practitioners will share their perspectives on what we as practitioners most need to know now about how new technologies are changing adult learning, skills assessment, the signaling systems for applying for jobs and accessing educational opportunities, and the ways in which we work.

Michelle R. Weise leads Strada Education Network’s workforce strategies, specializing in disruptive innovation and the future of learning and work. She has co-authored a book with Clayton M. Christensen about how online competency-based education will revolutionize the workforce and disrupt higher education titled, Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution. Michelle’s commentaries and research have been featured in a number of publications such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Boston Globe, Inside HigherEd, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and PBSNewshour. She serves on MA Governor Baker’s Commission on Digital Innovation and Lifelong learning, the Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and on the education advisory board for Village Capital. Weise is also a regular columnist for EdSurge and a senior advisor to Entangled Solutions. Michelle is a former Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Harvard and Stanford.

John Dillow has more than 25 years of experience working with underserved youth and families. As director of client services, he is responsible for assisting clients with the implementation of workforce development products. Before joining SkillSmart, John co-founded workforce.io as part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s New Options Project, which utilized principles of design and innovation for social impact. Workforce.io developed solutions for the entry-level employment market and serves as a great segue for John to manage our client portfolio and strategy. A graduate of the University of Maryland College Park, John began his career with Living Classrooms in Baltimore, MD, a nonprofit overseeing educational and workforce development programs that provided an array of services to non-traditional job seekers, youth, and those engaged in re-entry programs. John managed the successful expansion of Living Classrooms to the DC metro area, where it currently offers four tracks of education.

Jessica Rothenberg-Aalami, Ph.D., is the CEO and founder of Cell-Ed, a complete mobile solution to reach, teach, and upskill today’s low-literate workforce. A Silicon Valley native and entrepreneur for over 20 years, Rothenberg-Aalami has co-designed and delivered technology solutions that bridge education, digital and opportunity divides in more than 40 countries. Her experience spans work with major technology companies (e.g., Microsoft, Hewlett Packard), international organizations, governments, umbrella NGOs, and on-the-ground partners. An active collaborator and speaker, Rothenberg-Aalami is the co-author of Technology at the Margins: How IT Meets the Needs of Emerging Markets and holds advanced degrees in International Development, Business and ICT Design from UC Berkeley, University of Oregon, and Harvard.

Jen Vanek directs the IDEAL Consortium at the EdTech Center and implements the field testing of technologies invested in by the Employment Technology FundShe received her PhD in Curriculum & Instruction/Second Language Education at the University of Minnesota. She’s been working in the field of adult literacy since receiving her MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1995. Her recent work centers on creating online content for Adult Basic Education (ABE) learners and supporting the professional development of ESL and ABE teachers in the area of digital literacy, distance learning, and adult career pathways.
