Robert Matney, Principal Lorraine French, Counselor/instructor Alan Reed, Instructor Webster Correctional Institution is a level two institution for men located in Cheshire, Connecticut. Inmates incarcerated at the facility serve approximately one to five year sentences. Inmates are recruited from the prison population to enroll in the Adult Basic Education to College Transition Program, which is held at the institution school. Webster joined the New England ABE- to-College Transition Project in January 2002. Students are recruited from the housing units. Interested applicants fill out a form to attend an orientation meeting. At the orientation meeting students fill out a data sheet that asks questions about past schooling, learning likes and dislikes and submit a writing sample on a common topic. Students are given an overview of the course goals along with the background experience of their instructors. There is a question and answer session at the end of the orientation. Fifteen or twenty students are chosen and notified to attend the class. Classes are held two days a week with two hours of academic preparation each day in reading response, English, mathematics and computer skills. The counselor works two hours a day on personal issues, career development, study skills, the college process and financial aid. In addition students keep a portfolio of items on interviewing skills, note taking, learning styles, Myers-Briggs Tests, Harrington-O'Shea Career Tests, resume writing and writing a business letter. The counselor also sets up a mentoring program with our collaborating colleges. For the past year we have arranged to have a college course taught at the facility in the evening so students can earn college credits. Webster is partnered with two local colleges, Gateway Community College in New Haven, Connecticut and Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, Connecticut. Both colleges provide placement testing, campus tours, workshops and mentoring for the transition program students.
