Dorcas Place Family Literacy Center is a Non-Profit organization that was established in 1981 to help low income adults and their families achieve their educational and professional goals. To help families achieve their educational and professional goals we offer a wide range of programs. The organization provides basic literacy classes, ESL, Workplace Literacy program, Pre-GED, GED and the Bridge College Preparatory Program.

The Bridge College Preparatory Program has been working with students transitioning into college since the summer of 2001. We currently serve 30 students per semester. The goal of our program is to offer access to college for low income and first generation adult students who have achieved their GED or have a high school diploma. The criteria for entering the Bridge program is to be low income, first generation and get a score of 236 or above on the CASAS placement test. We currently offer a one semester Bridge Program that pays for the student's first class at CCRI (Community College of Rhode Island) during the spring or fall in which they receive college credit. During the spring and fall semester students have college workshops that include library and computer orientation, introduction to different programs at the college, Accuplacer testing and financial aid counseling all taking place at the college campus. Aside from the services that we provide on the college campus, our students are also eligible for academic, personal and career counseling at Dorcas Place. During the summer, Bridge students take an enrichment class which prepares them for the college life. Throughout the summer Bridge students have the opportunity to visit college campuses and cultural sites in the community as well as neighboring states.
