Contact for the College Transitions Program Portland, Maine's largest city, has been a forerunner in adult education, establishing academic classes for sixty-six students in 1850. Since then the program has continued to grow, serving over 6,000 students yearly in three areas: academic, vocational and avocational. PAE's academic program consists of English for speakers of other languages, basic through college prep level reading and math, adult high school diploma completion, and GED preparation and testing. In addition, our vocational program offers several advanced certificate programs and CNA training. PAE's ABE – to – College Transition program began in January 2003. Students work with the Transition Advisor and Teachers to develop individual learning plans tailored specifically to them. Students take a combination of math and/or English courses based on their academic need, as determined by in-house assessments and Accuplacer scores. We also offer a series of weekly workshops covering various topics such as: what to expect in the college setting, the financial aid process, applying to college, goal setting, time management, etc. Students can also take a lab science course, if necessary, a computer course if needed, and SAT preparation if SAT scores are required. Classes are offered in the morning or evening, twice a week. Most of the classes are held in our learning center location. A few are held at one of Portland's high schools, and some semesters a class or two is offered at our partnering college. Our partnering college is Southern Maine Community College, located in South Portland, ME. To enroll in the Transitions program students must have a GED or high school diploma, be over 17 years old, have never earned a college degree, and academically be ready to enroll in college within six to eight months. Typically 10 - 15 students are enrolled in the Transition program each semester. |
