Christine Larkin Under the direction of Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti, the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office serves 27 towns and the city of Quincy. The correctional center in Dedham, MA is a county facility that houses approximately 500 male offenders, both pre-trial and sentenced inmates. The Norfolk county Sheriff's Office joined the New England ABE-to-College Transition Project in 2001. The College Transition Program is the most demanding of all the academic programs offered at the Sheriff's Office. The program offers three semesters a year of pre-college level classes. Each semester runs for 12 weeks and consists of fourteen hours of classes per week. Classes offered include: Reading, Writing, Math, Computers, Life Skills, Academic Counseling, and a study hall class. Classes are held during the week as well as on weekends and run both day and nighttime. The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is fortunate to partner with three local colleges: Quincy College, Massasoit Community College and MassBay Community College. College Professors from each of these colleges teach the three academic classes. Having that direct connection with each of the three collaborating colleges makes for a smoother transition not only to college life but to the community as well. As the students cannot go out and visit college campuses, colleges representatives (both admissions and financial aid) from the area colleges come to the Sheriff's Office to present their programs and answer questions about their schools. The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office proudly graduates approximately 10 students each semester. Past graduates have gone on to attend Quincy College and Massasoit College and majored in business and computers. Collaborating Colleges: Quincy College Massasoit Community College MassBay Community College. |
