The New Haven Adult and Continuing Education Center provides services for more than 5,300 students each year. Accommodating the vast diversity of needs inherent to an urban area, the Center, along with its more than 30 satellite locations, offers numerous programs including the High School Credit Diploma, GED, ESOL, Teen Parents Outreach and Literacy, Certified Nursing Assistant and Phlebotomy licensures, CISCO Networking certification and enrichment and leisure courses. All programs at the Center have access to 97 computers in four labs to supplement instruction, for research, or computer training.

The mission of the Center is to provide academic and skills development and training to students, while helping them realize future goals through lifelong learning. To that end, four years ago, the Center expanded its services to include a comprehensive college transition program in partnership with Gateway Community College. This collaboration, the Gateway-Adult Education-Partnership (GAP), affords students a seamless transition from high school to college.

The GAP allows students in the High School Credit Diploma Program and advanced GED and advanced ESOL classes to take Gateway Community College developmental English, Math, and Human Development classes while continuing to finish high school or English proficiency classes. All classes are held at the Center. Counselors and caseworkers provide comprehensive support services to students enrolled in GAP classes. These services include goal setting, academic advising, Accuplacer testing, course registration, admissions counseling, financial aid advising, and developmental counseling. These critical services have proven to be very effective in maintaining student retention.

The New Haven Adult Education Center joined the ABE-to-College Transition Project in September 2001. Through the ABE-to-College Transition Project, the Center can provide former GAP students, who are now matriculating at Gateway Community College, with the mentoring and tutoring services they received at the Adult Education Center. Gateway's Counseling Department staff provides transition services to GAP students for one semester to assist them in adjusting to the challenges of a college campus. The comprehensive support services that are offered at both the Adult Education Center and Gateway Community College make this a unique partnership.
