Marshwood
joined the New England ABE-to-College Transition Project in September
2001. They offer six hours of academic prep in Language Arts and Math
and computer classes two evenings a week, and serve approximately 30 adults
annually in the transition program. Students also receive educational
and career counseling. The program uses the Equipped for the Future Framework
for student goal-setting with an emphasis on ongoing self-assessment.
Given that there is a critical shortage of nurses in the area, Marshwood
is making an extra effort to market the transition program to potential
nursing students.
Marshwood is partnered with two local colleges: York County Community
College (YCCC) and New Hampshire Community Technical College (NHCTC).
Both colleges provide placement testing and results, campus tours and
workshops, and mentoring for the transition program students. In addition,
YCCC offers technology training for the transition program students and
staff.
Established
in 1966, Marshwood Adult and Community Education serves two rural communities
in southern Maine as well as the adjacent towns in New Hampshire. Located
in the Marshwood High School in South Berwick, the program has a successful
partnership with the high school where they are free to access the school's
four computer labs.
