Tel: (802) 447-0111 Jan Martin Bopp Bridge-to-College is a postsecondary college readiness program conducted by The Tutorial Center, in collaboration with Community College of Vermont (CCV) – Bennington. It is a student-centered, skill and strength building, transition-to-college program that is available to qualified persons who have attained either a GED or Vermont Adult Diploma, as well as to a more limited number of persons who have received a traditional high school diploma some time ago. Although challenging, Bridge-to-College provides academic and practical preparation at the appropriate skill level to individuals who need both reinforcement and further development of college-oriented skills. This supportive "next step" educational program is designed to improve the probability of student survival, success, and continued study at the college level. Bridge-to-College is offered at virtually no cost to the participating students. All instruction, supplemental and support services, textbooks, and supplies are provided. Acceptance into the program is based on a combination of personal interviews and assessments, both formal and informal. The levels of each applicant's readiness, commitment, attitudes and aspirations, all relative to group dynamics, as well as program referrals and personal references, are given serious consideration. The program parallels an academic year calendar in a two-semester sequence. One group of program participants (Cycle I - Evening Session) will begin their two-semester cycle with the college fall semester, and complete the program by the end of the second (spring) semester. Another group (Cycle II - Morning Session) will begin their cycle with the spring semester, and complete the program during the fall semester of the following academic year. During the first semester of the cycle (fifteen weeks), students participating in the program attend classes at both sites: two three-hour class sessions per week at The Tutorial Center and one three-hour class session per week at CCV. During the second semester (fifteen weeks), students attend one three-hour session per week at CCV. The program is a composite of four main college preparatory components, three of which take place during the student's first semester in the program cycle. The first semester components are Academic Skills Development [primarily reading, writing, mathematics (including algebra), and applied computer literacy]; Introduction to College Studies (a pass-fail college-level course), and Effective Leadership (a one-credit college course). Supplemental skill-building sessions are provided in computer technology, math and writing, in addition to several special topic workshop offerings. The fourth main component, Career and Life Planning (a three-credit college course), occurs during the second semester of each cycle. Overall, the program provides a knowledge base and skill development in several academic areas, with a major emphasis on strategies that promote learning and achievement. The program focuses on education of the learner self, including learning styles and strategies, college study skills and strategies, research skills, communication and presentation skills, assertiveness and advocacy, cooperation and community building, career and life planning skills, financial and educational planning. Additionally, supportive academic advising, counseling, and mentoring services are integral parts of the Bridge-to-College program. Furthermore, program participants are encouraged to consider other college courses that are offered outside the program during the second semester of their program cycle, as well as during the college's summer session.
