Relationship with Colleges

A strong collaborative relationship with the college is essential to the success of the program. Access and exposure to the college helps attendance and program completion and has an impact on a student's persistence when he or she transitions into college.

The most successful collaboration happens on a number of levels. It is important for both administrations to recognize the importance and the benefits of an ABE-to-college transition program. If the collaborating college sees the transition program as beneficial, they will be willing to support the program.

The transition program counselor should develop relationships with the Admissions Department, the Financial Aid Office, and the Department of Student Services. The instructor should also have an ongoing dialogue with the college's Developmental Studies Department. The instructor and counselor should also know what the deadlines are for applying to various schools, for scholarships, and for financial aid. Additionally, the transition student should spend some time on the college campus to get a sense of campus life. Visit the colleges currently collaborating in ABE-to-College Transition Project.
