ASSESSMENT

Teacher assessing student There are many questions to consider in the assessment process. Transition programs use a range of assessment tools.

The best approach to assessment is to work with the collaborating college. Most colleges use either the Accuplacer or Asset for placement. If they will share their placement instruments this will help you decide if a student is ready for a transition course or if the student needs more remediation than the relatively short-term college transition program can provide. Each college has different standards for entry-level math and writing. It is important to know what is considered college-level course work as opposed to developmental course work by your collaborating college. You should look at the course syllabi for developmental courses (usually course numbers below 100) and 101 level courses.

If you do not have access to the collaborating college's placement instrument, most programs use the TABE, some programs use a 12 GLE in reading and a 7-8 GLE in math; some programs do not have specific GLE requirements. Most programs require a writing sample. When looking at students' GED test scores, scores about the 50% percentile on each content area test are a good predictor that the student will do well in a college setting. Some programs also use rubrics to help with their initial assessment. Math, reading, and writing rubrics have been provided for your assessment needs. After studying and discussing the assessment rubrics, you should ask students to set goals for their learning. ( See sample student response.)

For general information on placement tests, referred to as Ability-to-Benefit Tests, see the table created by Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
