Matching Mentors with Partners
There are many ways to match mentors and partners in a college
transition program. They can be matched by many different criteria
such as academic and career interests, similar backgrounds, or
by gender and age. This section contains information and forms
to aid in the matching process. "Matching
Mentors" goes over the issues in matching and different
ways to match mentors and partners. There are also two different mentor
profile and preference forms as well as a profile form for
the partner.
Keep in mind when using these forms, that the best mentoring relationships
are "natural mentoring" relationships, where the mentor
and partner match up on their own. It might be worthwhile to
have all mentors and partners to meet before making the actual
match to see if any natural relationships occur. If this self-selection
process is not possible, use an interest survey to make the connections.
It is important for the staff person, such as the Mentor Coordinator,
who has the most contact with potential mentors and partners
to make the match.
Supporting the Match
Once mentors have been trained and matched with their partners,
it will be helpful to equip them with tools to help build
and strengthen the mentor/partner relationship. Hopefully,
your mentors and partners will have no difficulty in coming
up with things to talk about or do. But, in case they do
have difficulty, this section provides a plethora of activities
to support the mentoring relationship. Included in the section
below is a list of possible activities,
feedback worksheets, and some helpful hints. The activities
are organized by the sources from which they were taken.
