Career Development and Goal Setting

Career Development is another important component of the ABE-to-College Transition Project. It is important for transition students to identify possible careers and colleges that offer related courses before they matriculate. To help your students identify these careers check out the Career Information Worksheet, the worksheet on Informational Interviewing, and the Values Clarification Worksheet. Many programs also use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a personality type assessment, or Choices, software designed to help students research and plan their careers.

Once your students have chosen their career path, they should set goals. Most students will have to balance their home life with work and school. Setting goals will help them to see their progress not only with their education but also with life at home and work. Use the Goal Setting Worksheet to help your students identify their primary and secondary goals.
