Dr. JoAnn Crandall, will kick off the conference with her keynote titled - "Designing Effective College Transitions for English Language Learners ".
JoAnn Crandall is Professor of Education and Director of the Doctoral Program in Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Prior to joining the faculty at UMBC in 1992, she was Vice President of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, DC, where she established and directed the National Clearinghouse on Adult ESL Literacy (NCLE) and several adult refugee and immigrant information dissemination and technical assistance projects.

She was the co-principal investigator on a project for the Council for the Advancement of Adult Literacy (CAAL), working collaboratively with researchers at five community colleges to identify exemplary Adult ESL instructional and professional development practices. The report of that research, on Passing the Torch (with F. Dr. Crandall is currently working with the Center for Adult English Language Acquisition (CAELA) on a study of career ladders in health-related careers for adult English language learners, and with the English Working Group helping to redesign the English portion of the U.S. Naturalization Examination. She was President of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and its Washington area affiliate (WATESOL), and of the American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL).
